A Look Ahead

ELA - 

  • In Spalding after break, scholars will continue their normal daily routine, learning 10 new words each day with a 20 word test on Friday. Please ensure your scholar follows all instructions for their homework. 
  • In Literature, we will begin our voyage with Nathaniel Bowditch with the moving novel, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham. Follow this link to purchase a copy via Amazon. We are thrilled to begin this heartfelt novel, in which we will explore grief, perseverance, and hope, among many other themes that this book teaches. Scholars will learn many new nautical terms, and we hope that Nat will serve as a role model to them as we begin the new year together.
  • In Writing,  we are excited for scholars to return to their fable studies after break! They will be reading "The Dog and Her Reflection" and completing writing exercises to support their learning. At the end of the week, scholars will write their own amplification for the fable to stretch their creativity. 
  • In Poetry, scholars have thus far memorized Stanzas 1-5 of "Paul Revere's Ride" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. After break, they will practice what they've learned and add Stanza 6 to their repertoire.

Math -

As we return from our Winter Break, we will complete our practice of word problems that use fractions. Then, we will prepare for and take our Unit 3 Chapter 6 quiz. On Friday, we will begin our review for our Units 1-3 Cumulative Test. We are so excited for the scholars to show just how much they have learned so far this year!

History - 

When we return, we will be learning about the Tang and Song Dynasties in China. Scholars will also get a chance to practice Chinese Calligraphy!

Science - 

Next in Science, we will review how animals react to stimuli. We will then see how plants respond to their environment.

A Look Ahead

ELA - 

  • In Spalding this week, scholars will continue their normal daily routine, learning 10 new words each day with a 30 word test on Friday. Please ensure your scholar follows all instructions for their homework. 
  • In Literature, we have concluded our journey with Robin and his Merry Men. The scholars had so much fun celebrating this novel, both with our celebration and with their essays that they wrote! This coming week, we will learn some additional background information about the Revolutionary War so that students can better understand "Paul Revere's Ride." These activities will also prepare them for our next Classic-to-Keep, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham.
  • In Grammar, scholars will spend this week reviewing the terminology during their time as 4th graders so far! At the end of the week they will show what they've mastered by taking a quiz about the different elements of grammar. Great job, scholars, for seeking truth, goodness, and beauty in all you do!
  • In Poetry, scholars have been continuing to work had at memorizing "Paul Revere's Ride" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This week, they will practice Stanzas 1-4 and learn Stanza 5.

Math -

This week, scholars will learn to interpret a fraction of a set as a whole number times a fraction. Tuesday, they will learn how to find the fractional part of a whole. We will finish the week working with word problems in which the scholars will find the fractional part of a whole and find the whole when given the fractional part.

History - 

This week we will visit the Han Dynasty, then we will meet some notable Chinese emperors!

Science - 

This week we will explore stimuli in both plants and animals. We will close out the week with a fun review activity before break.

A Look Ahead

ELA - 

  • In Spalding this week, scholars will continue their normal daily routine, learning 10 new words each day with a 20 word test on Friday. Please ensure your scholar follows all instructions for their homework. 
  • In Literature, we will conclude our adventure with Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Scholars have been working hard on their essays to show what they have learned about the themes in this novel. Their final essays are due on 12/10. They have been given class time to complete this task, but they may bring their work home to polish and finalize if they would like. Our celebration for this book is this coming Thursday, 12/9. 
  • In Writing this week, our scholars are learning about the expression "belling the cat"--did you know this term originated from a classic fable? Scholars will spend this week reading and studying the fable that it comes from. By the end of the week, they will have written a summary to show what they have learned. 
  • In Poetry, scholars have begun memorizing "Paul Revere's Ride" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This week, they will be working on Stanzas 3 and 4.  Please see the back of your scholar's poem to view our timeline for memorization.

Math -

In Math this week, students will continue practicing how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions. We will review this material and take a quiz on Thursday, 12/9. Then, on Friday we will dive deeper into the relationship between fractions and division.

History - 

This week our scholars will complete our unit on Medieval Europe with a test on Wednesday. Then, we will head east and begin our nit covering the Dynasties of China!

Science - 

This week we will continue to explore the senses, focusing on the relationship between sight and hearing. On Wednesday, scholars will make a model showing the way the senses operate.
