A Look Ahead

ELA -

  • In Spalding this week, scholars will continue their normal daily routine, learning 10 new words each day with a 30 word test on Friday. Please ensure your scholar follows all instructions for their homework.
  • In Literature, scholars will continue reading The Adventures of Robin Hood by Roger Lancelyn Green. Thus far, we have already learned so much from the virtues and follies of the characters in the novel. We have discussed the differences between mercy, justice, and revenge. We have seen hypocrisy and cruelty, generosity and tenderness. The students are doing an incredible job of analyzing and internalizing the complex morality of this book, and we have been most impressed. This week, we will see the fruits of Robin's kindness, and we will meet another famous merry man: Allin-a-Dale!
  • This week in Writing, scholars are exploring the fable "The Fox and the Grapes." Did you know that this fable is where the idiom "sour grapes" originated? Scholars will spend the week delving deeper into the meaning of the phrase and how it relates to the fable. They will finish the week by writing a fable summary!
  • In Poetry, scholars have been working hard to memorize "The Fool's Prayer" by Edward R. Sill. We will recite this poem before Thanksgiving Break, on 11/19.

Math -

In Math this week we begin by reviewing the parts of a fraction: numerator and denominator. We will use our understanding of multiples and factors to learn how to find equivalent fractions and a fraction's simplest form. Scholars will put these skills to practice by comparing fractions. On Thursday and Friday, we will review and practice these skills.

History -

This week we will meet great historical figures such as Thomas Becket and Eleanor of Aquitaine! We will also explore the Magna Carta and its influence on future generations.

Science -

This week we will find out what happened to our celery after leaving it in dye over the weekend! We will also begin to explore the structure of cells and tissue.
