A Look Ahead

ELA -

  • In Spalding this week, scholars will resume their normal daily routine, learning 10 new words each week with a 30 word test on Friday. Please ensure your scholar follows all instructions for their homework.
  • This week in Writing, scholars are learning all about anthropomorphism! They will read and reflect on the fable "The Crow and the Pitcher" to guide their study. By the end of the week, scholars will write their own piece inspired by the fable.
  • In Literature, scholars will begin reading The Adventures of Robin Hood by Roger Lancelyn Green. We will learn from the adventures and mistakes of Robin and his merry men as they fight for justice in England.
  • Scholars have already begun practicing their next poem: "The Fool's Prayer" by Edward R. Sill. Our goal is to recite this poem before Thanksgiving Break, on 11/19.

Math -

Scholars will be taking their Unit 2 Chapter 2 Quiz on Tuesday (10/26), which will cover long division, 4-digit by 1-digit multiplication, estimation, and word problems. Later this week, we will begin working on two-digit by two-digit multiplication, using various strategies to learn this concept. Please challenge your scholar to try new methods in addition to learning the standard algorithm. We will have homework in the workbook on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, as well as Rocket Math daily.

History -

In History this week, scholars will continue their studies of Medieval Europe. We will learn about the role of women in the Middle Ages, and scholars will learn about the Battle of Hastings. Scholars will see how this battle affected Medieval Society as we read Robin Hood, which features the conflict between the Normans and the Saxons. Later, scholars will learn about the Bayeux Tapestry and have a chance to illustrate their own tapestry.

Science -

This week in Science, scholars will learn about the 2 methods of broadcasting signals: analog and digital. We will discuss examples of this and learn how devices transfer both pictures and sounds. Later, we will review everything we have learned in our Waves Unit thus far in preparation for our test next Wednesday (11/3).
